This volume presents the proceedings of the international online conference Häter Köne / Tatar Memorial Day. The Kazan Khanate and Modern Tatarstan. Kazan 1552–2025, held on October 12, 2025, and organized by the World Council of Tatars.
The conference was dedicated to Häter Köne (Tatar Memorial Day), a day of remembrance honoring the defenders of the Kazan Khanate who lost their lives during the tragic events of October 1552 while defending Kazan against the forces of Ivan IV (Ivan the Terrible), ruler of the Muscovite state. This commemorative date occupies a special place in the historical memory of the Tatar people and serves as an occasion for scholarly reflection on the past, as well as for discussions on preserving historical heritage, national culture, and collective memory.
The conference brought together historians, researchers, public figures, and independent experts from Australia, Türkiye, Kazakhstan, Georgia, Canada, and several European countries. The presentations focused on the history of the Kazan Khanate, the causes and consequences of its fall, the place of the events of 1552 in historical memory and historiography, and their significance for contemporary Tatarstan and the global Tatar diaspora. Special attention was devoted to the current situation of the Tatar people, the preservation of national identity, language, and culture, as well as the challenges facing the Tatar nation in the twenty-first century.
The proceedings are published in both Russian and Tatar, reflecting the international character of the conference.

We hope that this publication will contribute to further research on the history of the Kazan Khanate, the preservation of historical memory, the strengthening of national unity, and the revival of Tatar national consciousness.
