Statement of the Council of Tatars on the Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Political Repressions
Today, on the Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Political Repressions, we bow our heads in memory of the millions who became victims of state cruelty and tyranny. Among them were thousands of sons and daughters of the Tatar people, persecuted for their beliefs, faith, and desire for freedom.
The Stalinist regime deliberately destroyed an entire stratum of the Tatar intelligentsia during the 1930s and 1940s. However, the persecution of Tatar activists did not cease even after that tragic period in history.
The Council of Tatars of the World strongly condemns the continuation of political repression in today’s Russia. We witness how, even now, those who stand for truth, justice, and the right of nations to sovereignty and cultural identity are imprisoned and silenced.
We demand the immediate release of all political prisoners.
The memory of the victims obliges us not to remain silent. We will continue to stand on the side of truth, freedom, and human dignity — until justice prevails.
In a free Tatarstan, there will be no place for political repression.
Forward to freedom! 30.10.2025
