About the event
The hunger strike was initiated by deputy Fauzia Bayramova after the Supreme Soviet of Tatarstan adopted a decision on May 13 to hold the Russian presidential elections in the republic. Writer Zaki Zainullin, Akhat Mushinsky, Zahid Makhmudi, poets Gazinur Murat and Rashit Akhmetzyan, and Kamal Theatre actor Ildus Akhmetzyan joined the protest — 18 people in total.
As a result of this action, on May 27 the Supreme Soviet adopted a resolution stating that the Russian presidential elections would not be officially organized in Tatarstan. On June 12, Mintimer Shaimiev was elected the first president of Tatarstan.
